This is a recipe that I tried to recreate at home.
Malarkodi. K,( I love the name, it means a flower vine.) makes these yummy prawns thokku, every harvest festival. And within minutes , it all gets sold out!
We love it so much that we often fix it up with her to keep a few packs aside for us to get after all the stalls are closed.Since we have a stall too.And she always saves a few packs for us. She sells them with chapathis( flat Indian bread),and that is a wonderful combination. I’ve also found out that it tastes heavenly with curd rice as well.
Prawns 250 gms ( De veined and Cleaned)
Shallots -1 cup chopped
tomato -1 cup chopped
Vinegar -1 Tbsp
Ginger/Garlic paste- 1tsp
Chilli powder -1tsp
Salt to taste
Chilli powder 1/4 tsp
Fennel seeds 1/2 tsp
Green Chillies –4 ( finely chopped)or to taste
Coriander leaves -1tbsp( Chopped finely)
Oil - 2tbsp
Mix together the ingredients given in To Marinate with the prawns.Keep aside for an hour or so.
Pour oil in a skillet. When hot, add the fennel seeds and chopped green chillies. Sauté for a min.Take care not to burn the chillies.
then add the chopped shallots.
Sauté till they are pink , limp and slightly golden brown. Then add the chopped tomatoes .
sauté till they break and then add chilli powder 1/4 tsp.
Stir fry till they all blend in well and form a paste like consistency. Check for salt. Remember that there is salt already in the marinade. So take care not to add too much salt.
Now add the marinated prawns.Stir once and cover. Reduce the flame and allow to cook.
Take care not to over cook the prawns as they tend to become tough .Finally garnish with coriander leaves.
Note:Please be warned that the dish may disappear in seconds once it is placed on the table and that the plates may be licked clean to the effect that it will not require any further washing :P
